1 World Cup 2026 on UK TV
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The BBC shows 54 matches and ITV shows 51, with the final simulcast on both.
| Detail | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament dates | 11 June to 19 July 2026 | FIFA |
| Total matches | 104 | FIFA |
| BBC matches (iPlayer) | 54 (licence needed) | BBC Sport / TV Licensing |
| ITV matches (ITVX) | 51 (highlights free) | ITV / TV Licensing |
| England v Croatia | Wed 17 June, 9pm | ITV1 / ITVX |
| England v Ghana | Tue 23 June, 9pm | BBC One / iPlayer |
| Panama v England | Sat 27 June, 10pm | ITV1 / ITVX |
Two of England’s three group games are on ITV, which matters for the licence-free route below. The split between broadcasters continues through the knockout rounds, confirmed match by match.
2 Do you need a TV licence for the World Cup?
It depends entirely on how you watch. The law draws the line at live television and BBC iPlayer, not at the World Cup itself.
| How you follow the World Cup | Licence needed? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Live match on BBC One or ITV1 (TV set) | Yes | Communications Act 2003 |
| Live stream on ITVX or BBC iPlayer | Yes | TV Licensing |
| Anything on BBC iPlayer (even highlights) | Yes | TV Licensing, 2016 |
| ITVX highlights / replays on demand | No | TV Licensing |
| Radio commentary (BBC Radio 5 Live / BBC Sounds) | No | TV Licensing |
| Text coverage on news and sport websites | No | TV Licensing |
| Watching at the pub | No (theirs covers it) | TV Licensing |
The key rule: a licence is required to watch or record live television on any channel or service, and to use BBC iPlayer for anything. On-demand viewing on ITVX, Channel 4, and My5 is specifically outside the requirement.
That means BBC matches are off-limits on the licence-free route, but ITV’s 51 matches, including the simulcast final, can all be watched as highlights or replays. See our complete guide to VOD and TV licence rules for the full legal position.
3 How to follow World Cup 2026 without a TV licence
Five steps to stay on the right side of the rules and still see every ITV match:
Step 1: Create a free ITVX account
Go to https://www.itvx.com and register. It is free, takes under 2 minutes, and only needs an email address.
Step 2: Wait for the match to finish
The licence-free route is on-demand only. Once ITV’s broadcast ends, highlights and replays appear in the ITVX World Cup hub.
Step 3: Watch highlights or replays on demand
Open the World Cup section on ITVX and pick the highlights or full-match replay. On-demand ITVX viewing does not require a TV licence.
Step 4: Avoid live streams and BBC iPlayer
Do not use the live channel tab on ITVX, and do not use BBC iPlayer at all; both require a TV licence. BBC matches are off-limits on the licence-free route.
Step 5: Use radio for live coverage
For real-time coverage without a licence, listen to live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live via radio, smart speaker, or BBC Sounds. Radio needs no TV licence.
4 What does and does not require a TV licence
| Activity | Licence needed? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Watch live TV (any channel, any device) | Yes | Communications Act 2003 |
| BBC iPlayer (any content, live or on demand) | Yes | TV Licensing, 2017 |
| ITVX on demand | No | TV Licensing |
| Channel 4 on demand | No | TV Licensing |
| My5 on demand | No | TV Licensing |
| Netflix / Disney+ / Amazon Prime | No | TV Licensing |
The BBC iPlayer rule was introduced in September 2016 and extended the licence requirement beyond live television for the first time. Read our full explainer on what counts as a TV receiver and our complete TV Licensing guide for how enforcement actually works.
5 Watching World Cup highlights from abroad
ITVX is geo-blocked outside the UK. If you are travelling or living abroad during the tournament, you will see an error when you try to load it. A VPN with a UK server routes your traffic through a UK IP address, bypassing the geo-block.
If you want live matches abroad rather than highlights, see my full guide to watching World Cup 2026 abroad, and the wider UK TV abroad guide for VPN comparisons.
